Beer of the Month: September 2017

Everyone has heard the story; Man goes out to sea, hears a beautiful song drawing him closer, gets enchanted by the sweet melodies of a beautiful mermaid… and then a yellow fish and a talking crab get involved… I can’t recall but, the point is, this amber style ale sings straight to my heart. I’m typically an amber/red ale kind of guy to begin with, but I can safely say that Mermaid’s Red by Coronado Brewing Co. was the one that started my fascination. It is a very drinkable beer at 5.7% ABV (alcohol by volume) with a caramel malt, moderately spicy hop-flavored body and a sweet, fruity smell up front.

Unlike most beers, in my opinion, its never too hot or too cold outside to enjoy a nicely brewed amber ale. With it’s light, full-flavored taste and carbonated body, it can be refreshing on a hot summer day and ALSO a very nice pairing with your winter holiday meals. Can’t beat it! I dare you to try and enjoy a Tripel IPA with an ABV of 15% or higher when it’s close to 100 degrees outside…actually no, don’t do that. That would be gross AND irresponsible. It doesn’t go down very well, especially on a full stomach.

Mermaid’s Red is September’s beer because it’s my birthday month and I wanted to bring it back to my roots. To my early beginnings of drinking beer for the flavor. Plus it reminds me of autumn, which is my favorite season! September is also special for Coronado Brewing Co. because, as of the first of the month, they have merged with Monkey Paw Brewing Company to help bring more beer to its vast distribution network and beer fans outside of their normal range of influence.

Happy Birthday to me and the birth of this partnership! Good luck to both sides of this merge and cheers to new flavors for the rest of us! Can’t wait to see what they have in store for the future.
