I’m always up for a good adventure and this city has such great gems sprinkled all throughout. Hiking trails to mountain tops, biking along the coastline, taking a trip back in time by visiting an historical landmark… pick your flavor! What I want to know is, can I bring my beer or nah?
Since 2007, San Diegans haven’t been able to enjoy a sunset on the beach with a beer in their hand so, are there ANY public places where you could still have the proverbial ‘cold one?’ Surprisingly yes! Of course, I would highly suggest some mild research into your specific destination but I’m sure you would be surprised.
BALBOA PARK
“Whaaaaaa?! You can drink there?!” And the answer is YES… but ONLY in certain areas so I wouldn’t exactly be sipping on a tall can while walking through the Museum of Man or anything. As long as it’s NOT GLASS and between the hours of noon to 8:00 pm, alcohol is permitted ONLY in the following locations:
- Botanical Building East Lawn and West Lawn
- Pan American Plaza Lawn
- Recital Hall Lawn
- Mall Lawn
- International Lawn
- Moreton Bay Fig Lawn
- House of Pacific Relations Lawn
Your dog can come along too! Just remember to keep the little ones on a leash and please do pick up after them. For more information, including maps and parking, visit the website at:

La Jolla Indian Reservation
If you haven’t been here already, do yourself a favor and pack up for a weekend. Chances are, you need it! Camping is already one of my favorite things to do just about any time of year and now you say I can ALSO tube down the San Luis Rey River?! Don’t forget to bring your towel, but leave ALL GLASS containers at home and remember to stay hydrated!
I’m starting to see a pattern with this whole NO GLASS thing. When in doubt, NO GLASS I guess.
The guys over at The Brew Project wrote a cool article on other parks around the county where alcohol is permitted. You can check that out at

Now, I may not be able to bring my own beer at these next locations but they are my personal favorite places to visit that offer a great experience…and an occasional beer cart or two.
Petco Park
We are very fortunate to have such a state-of-the-art facility in the heart of our city. And we’re ALSO very fortunate that this city just so happens to be the beer capital of the world! Over 20 different local craft breweries make the roster of the 100+ beers in the line-up. Take a stroll down Craft Row the next time you’re cheering on your favorite team or rockin’ out to your favorite band and check out the selection, it’s quite impressive. The San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park
We’ve done it, America! Craft beer is finally in front of the Reptile Exhibit! The Zoo and Wild Animal Park are actually my favorite places to drink if I could be completely honest. There’s something incredible about sitting in an outdoor patio looking out into the distance and seeing a rhino lying next to some crazy deer -looking thing, you know? A completely different world right in our own back yard! Grab a brew in a fancy souvenir cup (because it’s cheaper in the long run) and chill out with the elephants… tell them I say hi.
Last but DEFINITELY not the least!
Festivals!
Are there streets around your neighborhood that are blocked off? If it’s summer, then it is probably a festival of some sort. There is something for just about everyone out there whether you like beer, art, music…even bacon or mac and cheese!
We will be out this Saturday, August 12 at BeerX San Diego Beer and Music Festival hosted at the Waterfront Park located in downtown San Diego. Presented by 91X, bands such as Iration and Chicano Batman will be filling your ears while 33 local breweries can be filling your cups! Stay tuned for our next post where we will bring you exclusive coverage from our crawl around the BeerX grounds. Say hello and grab a beer with us! Hope to see you there, CHEERS!
