Unless you have been living under a rock in a galaxy far away, you should know that this is opening week for the long-awaited film STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI! Now, I may or may not have a bit of an obsession with this franchise so, in anticipation, I’ve been on a quest to consume just about anything I an get my hands on. Low and behold I find the perfect and most delicious way to do so; stopping by Thorn Street Brewing Co in North Park, Ca for a STAR WARS themed night.
Patrons were encouraged to dress up as their favorite STAR WARS character for a chance at winning a beer tab worth $50. They also rolled out some fun new brews named after some of Thorn Street Brewing’s favorite references.
I started my night with the Far Far Away IPA, which had the lowest Alcohol By Volume (ABV) of the four brews at 7%, but I loved the fact that it was made with Galaxy Hops which almost gave itself to its perfect name. It was refreshingly crisp with a lot of that hop flavor right off the top.
The Dark Fader Stout was as dark as my elementary school’s physical education teacher’s soul, but it wasn’t as bitter. The coffee flavor was so robust and, infused with the chocolate, I forgot I was drinking a beer for a second… until that second was over and I was hit with a myriad of flavors and the kick of the 7% ABV. Very rich and smooth, full flavored goodness.
My favorite beer though would have to go to the Chewbacca Doppelbocka. Not only was the name calling my attention, but I was glad to see a German style lager up on the board. It was a dark amber in color, uber complex in flavor, and coming in at 8.7% ABV, this one could kick you into ludicrous speed with the quickness so they served this one in a smaller 10oz glass. If you like malted beers, this ones for you!
Last but not least, The Menace Imperial IPA… my goodness was this beer delicious! When I saw the ABV at 9.7% I had prepared my body and braced for the impact of a rough landing but, though this beer WAS strong with the force, it was unexpectedly bright and juicy. A very nice surprise to finish off my galactic journey of flavor.
Food for the night was provided by Born in Brooklyn, where fresh ingredients meet east coast flavor! Try the Momma’s Balls and say “Hi” to ya motha for me!
The staff here at Thorn Street Brewing Co are all wonderful, the vibe in here was great and the service was outstanding. Check them out whenever you’re in the neighborhood and, even if the STAR WARS beers are no longer available, there is always a great selection on tap. Catch you all next time! Cheers!
